Campaign to scrap VAT on suncreamTuesday, August 25, 2009As part of a summer sun safety campaign the Teenage Cancer Trust and Superdrug are calling on the Government to scrap the VAT on suncream. Suncream plays a vital role in skin cancer prevention but the Government charges VAT on it, calling it a 'luxury item'. The Government charges consumers £20m a year in VAT for suncream yet the cost of skin cancer to the health service in this country is in excess of £190m a year. This doesn't make sense at all. Sun exposure is the main cause of malignant melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers. Figures from Cancer Research UK show that malignant melanoma incidence rates in Britain have more than quadrupled since the 1970s. If you'd like to sign the petition please visit the Teenage Cancer Trust's Shunburn website. |
