RCF Conference and AGM - read all about it!

Friday, October 06, 2006

On Wednesday 04 October, on a sunny autumn day, RCF members and supporters from all over the country converged on St Peter's, Eaton Square in London, for the RCF's first Conference and AGM. It was lovely to see so many of you and to meet people whom we only previously knew through phone conversations or emails.

Our speakers

Gwen Harlow, Chair of RCF Trustees, welcomed the attendees and RCF Co-ordinator, Penny Wilson-Webb talked about accessing best quality care and the work of the RCF.

We are most grateful to our visiting speakers, Frank Saran and Louise Soanes from the Royal Marsden Hospital. Frank was our last speaker of the day and he kindly stayed on afterwards answering many queries from attendees.

Many thanks also to RCF Advisor, Vanessa Jenkins, who talked about rarer cancers from her perspective as a patient and a GP.

Opportunities to chat!

During the coffee and lunch breaks there was plenty of time to chat and meet other attendees.

Filming

Many thanks to the RCF members and supporters who agreed to be filmed talking about their experience of having a rarer cancer. These contributions will be used to help raise awareness of the needs of people with rarer cancers.

We are extremely grateful to Phil Barthropp, our cameraman, who gave his time as a gift to the RCF and who will receive an RCF Flower Award as a token of our appreciation.

RCF Trustees

Many thanks to our outgoing Trustees and welcome to the six Trustees who have just been elected. They are: Jo Calvert-Mindell, Susan Graham, Gwen Harlow, David Soldinger, Jean Turner and Clyte Venvell.

Some comments from attendees

By all accounts, people found the day very worthwhile. Here are some comments from attendees:

"Just wanted to thank all involved with organising yesterday's conference. It was certainly an interesting experience to talk to so many people with "other" cancers, although sad to hear that all seem to have experienced the same sort of difficulties as myself. To be diagnosed with cancer is shattering enough, but then trying to get relevant information for us "odd" ones is like a never-ending nightmare and that is where the Rarer Cancer Forum is so desperately needed".

"Thought the day was lovely and really well organised (food and drinks included!) and was really informative from the information we heard. Yet again from hearing people speak of their experiences I realise how everyone's situation while similar in many ways i.e. having difficulty in getting a diagnosis in the first place etc they are also so different and varied, not just in the cancer type and location, and presentation etc but also in experience with healthcare and access to support. And I think that highlights the enormity of what RCF represents".

Thank you

Many thanks to all of you who came and participated in lively discussions, and to everyone who helped to make the day so successful. Finally, we wish to express our grateful thanks to Macmillan Cancer Support for sponsoring the event.
