Some good news from NICE!

Thursday, May 28, 2009

The National Institutue for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has issued its Final Appraisal Determination (FAD) on sunitinib for the treatment of gastrointestinal stromal tumours.

Sunitinib is recommended as a treatment option for people with unresectable and/or metastatic malignant gastrointestinal stromal tumours if:

  • imatinib treatment has failed because of resistance or
    intolerance, and
  • they have an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG)
performance status of 0 or 1 (i.e. good performance status).

NOTE: An ECOG performance status of 0 means the person is fully active, able to carry on all pre-illness performance without restriction. A performance status of 1 means the person is restricted in physically strenuous activity but ambulatory and able to carry out work of a light or sedentary nature, e.g. light house work, office work.
