Exceptional funding for cancer treatment

The following information was requested from the PCT under the Freedom of Information Act.

Written protocols
The Teaching PCT has a policy on the management of interventions which are not routinely commissioned.

Cancer treatments funded by PCT following exceptional requests

Four patients were funded in financial year 2007/2008.  Treatments funded were:

  • Inflixumab and dacluzimab as third line therapy for patient who could not tolerate any form of chemotherapy for a rare form of cancer
  • Velcade for bone marrow cancer
  • Sunitinib for renal cancer
  • Velcade for myeloma

Cancer treatments not funded by PCT following exceptional requests

In the financial year 2007/2008 the following treatments were not funded:

  • Nilitonib for CML
  • Adjuvant Avastin for advanced colorectal cancer (two requests)
  • Sunitinib for renal cancer (four requests)
