Spend on cancer per patient in England 2006 - 2007

Exceptional funding for cancer treatment

The following information was requested from the PCT in 2008 under the Freedom of Information Act.

Written protocols
The PCT has a written policy for handling exceptional requests. It is known as the Individual Cases Panel Policy.

Individual Cases Panel
Membership is as follows:

  • Director of Public Health or Consultant in Public Health Medicine
  • Director of Finance and Procurement or other Commissioning Division Director
  • Two Non-Executive Directors (Chair and Vice-Chair)
  • Three GPs, one of whom will be a PEC GP
  • Deputy Director for Acute Commissioning and Practice Based Commissioning
  • PBC Commissioning Manager (business support)

Cancer treatments funded by PCT following exceptional requests

Since  April 2007, the PCT has agreed to fund treatment for six patients. The PCT's Freedom of Information Lead declined to tell us which treatments had been funded because "Given the numbers involved, to list these would pose a risk that individual patients might be identifiable".

Cancer treatments not funded by PCT following exceptional requests

Since April 2007, the PCT has not funded the following treatments:

  • Pemetrexed/cisplatin (combination)
  • Docetaxel
  • Lenalidomide
  • Ibritumomab/Yttrim M-90 (combination)
  • Dasatinib
  • Erlotinib
  • Retuximab
  • Bortezomib
