Exceptional funding for cancer treatment

The following information was requested from the PCT under the Freedom of Information Act.

Written protocols
The PCT has a Policy and Procedure for Non-Contractual Referrals.

Cancer treatments funded by PCT following exceptional requests

Since 01 October 2006, the PCT has approved 28 patients' exceptional requests for cancer treatment that, at the time of receipt, had no NICE approval in terms of finalised Technology Appraisal Guidance.  NICE guidance on some of the following exceptional requests was published during the period 01 October to date (30 May 2008) , therefore some requests were approved or turned down either pre-dating guidance or following its publication.

Cancer treatments funded by Hampshire PCT following an exceptional request since 01 October 2006:

  • Temozolomide (Temodal) in glioma (brain cancer) - now approved by NICE
  • Bortezomid (Velcade) in multiple myeloma - approved by NICE in October 2007
  • Tarceva (Erlotinib) in non-small cell lung cancer - PCT stated on 30 May 2008 that "Publication of Technology Appraisal Guidance is due in June 2008, however NICE's current final appraisal determination does NOT recommend it - Hampshire PCT has funded two cases in the past under the exceptions process".
  • Dasatinib (Sprycel) in chronic myeloid leukaemia
  • Lenalidomide (Revlimid) in multiple myeloma - NICE guidance due in January 2009
  • Pemetrexed (Alimta) in mesothelioma - approved by NICE in January 2008
  • Cetuximab (Erbitux) in head/neck cancer - NICE guidance due in June 2008 although final appraisal determination recommends it

Cancer treatments not funded by PCT following exceptional requests

Since 01 October 2006, the following were not approved by the PCT following an exceptional request:

  • Cetuximab in colorectal cancer
  • Zevalin (Ibritumomab Tiuxetan) with radio-nucleide therapy in non-Hodgkin's lymphoma
  • Sunitinib (Sutent) in renal cell cancer
  • Gemcitabine (Gemzar) - not known for treatment of which cancer this was refused
  • Sorafenib (Nexavar) in renal cell cancer
  • Tarceva in non-small cell lung cancer
  • Bevacizumab (Avastin) in colorectal cancer
  • Temozolomide for prolatinoma (pituitary tumour)
