Exceptional funding for cancer treatment

The following information was requested from the PCT in 2008 under the Freedom of Information Act.

Written protocols
The PCT uses written protocols to assess exceptional treatment requests for cancer treatment.  An Exceptional Treatments Committee (ETC) assesses these requests.

Exceptional Treatments Committee
Membership of the Committee is as follows:

  • Chair is Non-Executive Director approved by the Board
  • Director of Business Planning and Commissioning
  • Director of Public Health
  • Professional Executive Committee (PEC) General Practitioner
  • General Practitioner
  • Director of Nursing
  • Two lay members

Cancer treatments funded by PCT following exceptional requests

Since 01 October 2006, requests from 12 patients have been approved by the PCT. The following treatments have been funded:

  • Retuximab
  • Herceptin (adjuvant)
  • Topotecan and cisplatin
  • Gemtuzumab
  • Erlotinib (Tarceva)
  • Sunitinib
  • Bevacizumab
  • Lenalidomide (Revlimid)
  • Irinotecan (cetuximab)
  • Trabectadin
  • Avastin
  • Liposomal doxorubicin (Caelyx)

Cancer treatments not funded by PCT following exceptional requests

Since 01 October 2006, the PCT has not funded the following:

  • Sorafenib, Sunitinib, Avastin
  • Erlotinib (Tarceva) - 2 patients
  • Sunitinib
  • Irinotecan (Cetuximab)
  • Trabectadin
