Exceptional funding for cancer treatment

The following information was requested from the PCT in 2008 under the Freedom of Information Act.

Written protocols
A single patient treatment policy covers all requests, cancer and non-cancer. A Single Patient Treatment Panel makes decisions on applications for single patient treatments.

Single Patient Treatment Panel
Membership is as follows:

  • Non-Executive (Chair)
  • Two clinicians with relevant experience e.g. GPs. GDPs
  • Medical Director or their nominated representative
  • Consultant in Public Health
  • Head of Strategic Commissioning
  • Medicines Management representation (when appropriate)
  • Other members may be co-opted as appropriate and specialist input sought e.g. Children's Services, Learning Disabilities etc

Cancer treatments funded by PCT following exceptional requests

Since 01 October 2006, the PCT has approved 26 exceptional treatment requests.  The treatments were:

  • Sorafenib
  • Dasatinib
  • Sunitinib
  • Velcade
  • Imatinib
  • Gemcitabine

Cancer treatments not funded by PCT following exceptional requests

Since 01 October 2006, the PCT has not funded the following treatments:

  • Sunitinib
  • Velcade
  • Avastin
  • Erlotinib
