Exceptional funding for cancer treatment

The following information was requested from the PCT in 2008 under the Freedom of Information Act.

Written protocols
The PCT has a process to assess all exceptional treatment requests including cancer treatment.  Requests are assessed by the Priorities Advisory Group (PAG).

Priorities Advisory Group
Membership is as follows:

  • A PCT Medical Advisor (Chair)
  • A PEC approved GP from within Doncaster's PCT's area
  • The Investigating Officer (Assistant Director of Public Health) Doncaster PCT
  • A non-exceutive director of the PCT Board
  • A Pharmaceutical Advisor from Doncaster PCT
  • A Commissioning representative from Doncaster PCT
  • A clinical representative from Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals Foundation Trust
  • A clinical representative from Doncaster and South Huimber NHS Trust

Cancer treatments funded by PCT following exceptional requests

Since 01 October 2006 the PCT's Priorities Process has approved 41 requests. The treatments funded were:

  • Bone marrow transplant
  • Alpha interferon
  • Stereotactic radiosurgery
  • Velcade
  • Lenalidomide
  • Sunitinib
  • Alimta
  • Erlotinib

Cancer treatments not funded by PCT following exceptional requests

Since 01 October 2006, Doncaster's Priorities Process has declined to fund the following cancer treatments:

  • Cetuximab
  • Erlotinib
  • Bortezomib
