Exceptional funding for cancer treatment

The following information was requested from the PCT in 2008 under the Freedom of Information Act.

Written protocols
The PCT has a policy that sets out the processes that will be followed for handling funding requests for individual patient treatments, drugs and procedures. It also has a document that describes the principles which will be used in considering the commissioning of new treatments for rare or very rare conditions (sometimes referred to as 'orphan and 'ultra orphan' diseases) in situations where there is no national guidance. Cancer treatments funded by PCT following exceptional requests

Since 01 October 2006, the PCT funded eight exceptional requests for cancer treatment. These were:

  • Sutent - four patients
  • Sorafenib - one patient
  • Tarceva - one patient
  • Velcade - one patient
  • Somatuline - one patient
  • Exenical - one patient

Cancer treatments not funded by PCT following exceptional requests

Since 01 October 2006, the following treatments were not funded by the PCT:

  • Sutent
  • Sorafenib
  • Cetuximab
