Exceptional funding for cancer treatment

The following information was requested from the PCT under the Freedom of Information Act.

Written protocols
Cambridgeshire PCT has written documents that are used to assess exceptional requests for all types of treatments, including cancer treatments.  All requests are considered, whether approved by NICE or not. Each Exceptional Case funding request is assessed individually - there is no list of cancer treatments which are/are not funded by the PCT. Exceptional funding requests are made by the appropriate referring clinician using the form provided by the PCT.

Cancer treatments funded by PCT following exceptional requests

Between 01 January 2007 and 01 April 2008, requests for treatment from 39 cancer patients have been approved by Cambridgeshire PCT under the exceptional requests process.  The following treatments were funded in that time period:

  • Bevacizumab
  • Bortezomib
  • Cladribine
  • Dasatinib
  • Docetaxel
  • Erlotinib
  • Gemcitabine
  • Herceptin
  • Oxaliplatin
  • Pegvisomant
  • Sunitinib
  • Sorafenib

Cancer treatments not funded by PCT following exceptional requests

Since January 2007, funding has not been refused for cases where exceptionality has been demonstrated.
