Exceptional funding for cancer treatment

The following information was requested from the PCT under the Freedom of Information Act.

Written protocols
Exceptional requests for treatment (whether for cancer or not) are considered by the PCT's Exceptional Cases Commitee (ECC) process.

Cancer treatments funded by PCT following exceptional requests

Since 01 April 2006, four patients' exceptional requests have been approved by the PCT.  The treatments were:

  • Photodynamic therapy for oesophageal cancer (two requests)
  • Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for cancer of nasal pharynx
  • Assessment at an NHS homeopathic hospital for prostate cancer

Cancer treatments not funded by PCT following exceptional requests

Cancer treatments not funded were:

  • Acupuncture for recurring breast cancer
  • Bevacizumab for colorectal cancer
  • Cetuximab for rectal cancer
