Exceptional funding for cancer treatment

The following information was requested from the PCT under the Freedom of Information Act.

Written protocols
Bury PCT has a written Effective Use of Resources (EUR) policy.  Exceptional requests for cancer treatment are assessed through the EUR process.

Cancer treatments funded by PCT following exceptional requests

Since 01 October 2006 six requests for cancer treatment have been approved by the PCT.  The treatments and their cost were as follows:

  • matched unrelated donor transplant (approximately £87,000)
  • matched unrelated donor transplant (approximately £85,000)
  • matched unrelated donor transplant (approximately £87,000)
  • possible matched unrelated donor transplant (approximately £87,000)
  • sunitinib (£3000 per month for two months)
  • sunitinib (total cost £19,000)

Cancer treatments not funded by PCT following exceptional requests

Since 01 October 2006, one request for Nexavar was not funded (cost was approximately £15,000).
