Barbara's Fund Fun RunBarbara’s Fund has been set up by Kerry-Anne Kitson, in memory of her mother Barbara Fitzmaurice who sadly passed away in May 2008. Barbara was diagnosed with gall bladder cancer in March 2008, and died only nine weeks later after a very short but extremely intense illness. Kerry-Anne writes: "In order to achieve something positive out of something so horrific I am aiming to raise £5K for the RCF through a series of fundraising events in spring 2009. On Sunday 29th March 2009, I am holding a sponsored 5km fun run on Epsom Downs Racecourse. There is also a 1km route for children to participate in and all participants are being encouraged to raise as much as possible through sponsorship". Update from Kerry-Anne - 27 March 2009"With only a couple of days left to go now I thought I send you a final update. The response to my fun run has been amazing although it has been an awful lot of hard work. I have got nearly 160 people coming out running with entries still coming in every day and some coming to register on the day now. Asda have donated all of the water for the run (over 300 bottles of it), our local sweet shop have provided a mars bar for every goodie bag and Sainsburys have donated a £20 cheque as well as an Easter egg for each of the little children taking part in the 1km run! I’ve got over 10 volunteers coming out to Marshall for me on the day as well so people are kind in giving up their time. So, all we need now is for my mum to send the sunshine and we should all be ok on the day! I can’t wait to see how much money we raise for you". Update from Kerry-Anne - 30 March 2009"What a fantastic day we had yesterday! Fortunately the weather was nice and dry (although a bit cold) and in the end over 170 runners took part in either the adult 5km race or the kids 1km run. The atmosphere was lovely and everyone I’ve spoken to thoroughly enjoyed it. I’m not too sure yet how much we’ve raised but I’m hoping it’s at least if not a little over half of my £5K target". BAE Systems, New Malden join the fundraising!30 May 2009 - we've had a message from Kerry-Anne's brother, Bryan. He writes: "I work at the New Malden site for BAE Systems. Our Charity Committee arrange a regular "Freestyle Friday" (a dress-down day), once a month for various good causes nominated by staff in the office. It was Rarer Cancer Forum's turn yesterday (29th May), so I got to be bucket monitor and relieve people of their loose change! It was also a great opportunity to advertise and discuss what RCF do with my colleagues". Thanks to the generosity of Bryan and his work friends an additional £300 has been raised which is being added to Barbara's Fun Run total. This is absolutely fantastic and RCF is very grateful to Bryan and all the good folk at BAE Systems New Malden. Well done, Kerry-Anne, and thank you so much. And all you supporters, it's still not too late to donate if you haven't yet got round to it!! Please make the cheque payable to Rarer Cancers Forum and mark the back of the cheque 'Barbara's Fund Fun Run'. Barbara
